King: I am worried the Vizier has been lying to me, despite his ring usually compelling him to only tell the truth. I need you to investigate this matter... discreetly.

Party Mage: Perhaps the enchantment wore off after being... washed?

Analyze Magic is an Information-type Knowledge spell that identifies what spells are currently affecting the subject.[1] It is mainly used for identifying enchantments and long-term magical afflictions--for identifying spells during a firefight, use Identify Spell!

If a subject has multiple spells affecting them, Analyze Magic will tell the caster the weakest (lowest cost) enchantment first. Analyze Magic is resisted by spells that conceal magic, and Name and Password enchantments count as separate spells that resist at +5 each, and a wizard may only attempt an Analyze Magic on a Name or Password once.[2]

Earlier Editions[]

AM had additional benefits/drawbacks in 2e/3e but which were explained elsewhere in the book:

  • pg 6 "A little experimentation, or an Analyze Magic spell cast for the purpose, will easily determine exact mana level."
  • pg 47 "The Analyze Magic spell can determine what quirks a Powerstone has."
  • pg 94 Detecting Aspected Areas "On a critical success he will know the nature of the new area; otherwise Analyze Magic may be cast."
  • pg 99 "spells to analyze magic do not work on elixirs"

The use of it to evaluate mana appears to have been removed in 4E, now only the instinctive ability Magery provides appears able to do that.
