City Beyond the Gate

"City Beyond the Gate" is an adventure published in Dragon #100 (August 1985) that involves D&D players traveling to modern London via Gate to retrieve the Mace of St. Cuthbert and can be used to demonstrate the flexibility of GURPS regarding things outside the "standard" pseudo Medieval-Renaissance setting of D&D.

The arrival point is the major island in Boating Lake of Battersea Park, London and the Mace is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The nearby Natural History Museum serves as a diversion as the tracking device can only determine approximate direction and distance.

London, England, Earth; Present
Population: ~9 million (2019); (Search +3) Notes
Physical and Magical Environment Wealth note: Due to the high amount of silver and gold in most D&D worlds the players will become far wealthier then they were back home. Gold is a real problem as the avoirdupois ounce is 0.9114 Troy ounce and an avoirdupois pound is 14.58 Troy ounces (1.215 Troy pounds).

The connections to the planes that power D&D Magic are very poor in London. This can be simulated in GURPS with:

  • Summon ...: -5
  • Gate College: -10
  • Illusion and Creation: +10
Appearance: Impressive; +3 Hygiene: +2 Terrain: Plains

Reduce population to ~200 if SCP Foundation present.
City itself is TL 6; Foundation if present is TL8^
Search for food will only produce Dr. Goody's Wonderfood. At best this is a Addiction (Cheap, Highly Addictive) [-10] substance though it can cause mutations or even death if consumed.
The Bobbies (use Zombie stats as baseline) will attack on sight; can be alerted by "Eyes in the Sky" a robotic pigion
