Sometimes, your character doesn't have the right skill... but they have a related skill that can sort of work instead! This is called a default roll or skill default.[1] If your character is particularly good at improvising, they might have a lower penalty.
All skills on this wiki should have their defaults listed on their own page.
Defaulting into Specialties[]
If you have a general skill without a specialty (such as Chemistry or Cooking), you may default into optional specialties at -2 (such as Chemistry (Analytical) or Cooking (Pastries)). Likewise, an optional specialty may default into any the skills its parent skill defaults to, at an additional -2.[2]

- Rule of 20 (effective attribute over 20 still defaults as if it were 20)
- No Default
Both were initially hard rules, with future supplements introducing options for loosening them, usually with perks.
