Inspired by the actual Dire Wolf by way of Tolkien the Dungeon Fantasy 2: Dungeons version is a powerful quadrupedal predator occupying the forests and taigas of the Dungeon Fantasy world. They are generally fast, have a dangerous bite, and travel in packs. Despite their name, they are classed as Giant Animal, not Dire Animals, since they are simply very large wolves, with no particular mutations or magical attacks.
A pack of dire wolves will often have an Alpha Dire Wolf. In classic RPG fashion, they have a signature style,[1] and are bigger and smarter than their peers.
Behavior[]
Rumors of orcs or goblins riding Dire Wolves are considered apocryphal, as dire wolves will eat orcs and goblins as well. They are however, still affected by Animal spells and Animal Handling, and could be rather powerful allies if domesticated.[2]
Tactics and Countertactics[]
Dire Wolves attack like wolves do: Knocking down prey (bites or slams to the leg) and biting the neck, which does massive wounding to living targets. They have the same vulnerability as most unarmed animals do, however--they deal poorly with spacing weapons (spears, polearms), they have no projectile attacks, and they must dodge to avoid damage.
When fighting natural beasts, it is best to use their own instincts against them--using Iron Arm to absorb a bite attack to a limb could save you a lot of trouble, and counterattacking with a C-range melee weapon could end a fight rather quickly!
