The Face is a hit location, covering the jaw, cheeks, nose, and ears.[1] Most helmets have an open face or no face protection (such as a simple pot helm), so their DR doesn't apply, leaving the face vulnerable. Luckily, the face is at -5 to hit.
Knockdown and Crits[]
Knockdown rolls from a major wound to the face are at -5! This can be especially useful against most "animal" like monsters who have to bite to do damage. Any creature from a giant rat to a mighty bear can--theoretically--be knocked down with a strong hit to the face.
Special Damage Rules[]
As for special, hit-location-based damage rules, the face location takes x1.5 damage from Corrosion.
Mental Crippling[]
It can't normally be 'crippled' by any amount of HP loss, but 1/3 FP loss (like an extremity) if inflicted in Psychic Duels can lower appearance levels due to rictus
