GURPS can be as simple or as complex as the group wants. It is as much a toolbox as it is game and just as you don't use all the tools in the toolbox to build something you don't use all the parts of GURPS.

That said some guidelines should be followed:

Crawl before you can Walk; Walk before you can run[]

The Basic Set can be overwhelming so a fledgling GM might want to use GURPS Lite to get their players familiar with the system.

Keep skill resolution simple[]

Skill resolution is simply roll the resulting number or lower on a 3d6. Remember there are bonus modifiers as well as penalties so skill need not be as high as players think they need to be.

Use Combat Lite rather then Advanced Combat[]

Unless you are familiar with it or really really need it, the Advanced Combat system should be avoided. Remember, GURPS is a role-playing game not a full combat simulator game.

Remember complexity comes with a Price[]

The less complex you make the game the better everyone will be. This goes triple for GMs because they will have to deal with all the interactions of those components they put into the game.
