Government Type is a category in the Realm Management system. Each type effects the Control Rating, Openness Rating, and has its own particular Benefits and Drawbacks. Some government types in the basic set actually fall under Economy Type in the Realm Management system (see below).

Government chart[]

A certain type of government doesn't absolutely determine its CR. For example, Camelot is often portrayed as a CR3 or even CR2 Monarchy.

  • Constitutional Monarchy: There is a Monarchy but the power is actually in the hands of elected officials (see Representative Democracy)

  • Geriatocracy: government reserved to the elderly or very old
  • Gynarchy: government reserved to females only.
  • Hierarchy: government which is typically religious in nature and tends toward mixture of Feudal and Caste
  • Magocracy: government by professional wizards only. If wizards' magic is divine will likely be a Theocracy
  • Matriarchy: government by the eldest females of whatever social Units exist, CR (any)

  • Pedocracy: government by the learned, savants, and scholars, Generally a Meritocracy though Caste versions can exist.

  • Socialist: The government directly manages the economy.

Definitions[]

  1. โ†‘ No government
  2. โ†‘ Government which rests in self-derived, absolute power usually hereditary.
  3. โ†‘ "True" democracy where every citizen (which varies) can vote on matters
  4. โ†‘ All government is vested in a single ruler (or a small group) whose decisions aren't constrained by legal restraints or regulations. If hereditary it is called a Monarchy
  5. โ†‘ government by department
  6. โ†‘ As for Clan/Tribal, but each clan has a set role or profession. There tends to be a social hierarchy for these castes.
  7. โ†‘ The society is one large, interlocking family made up of allied clans or tribes and ruled by the clan elders.
  8. โ†‘ Government is controlled by a more powerful one
  9. โ†‘ Corporate officers rule the society. Also called a Syndicracy
  10. โ†‘ Similar to Autocracy/Dictatorship but subsidiary lords retain local power; therefore, the ruler must be careful to maintain the lordsโ€™ support, or be overthrown.
  11. โ†‘ Government by judges
  12. โ†‘ Elected representatives form a congress or parliament.
  13. โ†‘ Rule by a religious group or leader. Freedom of religion is unlikely, and there is no distinction between religious and civil law. Some philosophies/ideologies effectively religions in all but name. Confucianism in the real world and Capitalism in Brave New World are examples of this.
