The phrase hitch a ride exists in multiple GURPS books, for different advantages.

3rd edition[]

In 3e, both Ghost and Spirit Form 1.0 in GURPS Voodoo discussed it, as did Ghost Form in GURPS Horror and Spirit Form 2.0 in GURPS Spirits, where it is negated by the Can't ride in vehicles limitation, which is mandatory with Can't Materialize

Since this required actively spending a fatigue point (unclear if this was done as a free action or required a concentrate maneuver, as is activation with other forms of materialization) whatever you spend an FP on latest is presumably what you attach to.

Balancing on 2 vehicles ala http://indusladies.com/community/threads/ajay-devgun-his-stunts.188894/ creates a problem with Insubstantiality in 4e, as per GURPS Powers 55:

Paradoxically, most such entities can โ€œanchorโ€ themselves to material objects as needed, allowing them to stand on floors, ride in vehicles, and so on. This is a standard feature of Insubstantiality.

How to alter what object you are anchored to isn't actually explained.

4th edition[]

In 4e, page 64 of Basic Set: Characters mentions it in relation to Jumper. The Cannot Escort and Cannot Follow limitations are related to it.

The anchor rule on pg 55 of powers is more in the classic 3e sense:

Paradoxically, most such entities can โ€œanchorโ€ themselves to material objects as needed, allowing them to stand on floors, ride in vehicles, and so on. This is a standard feature of Insubstantiality.
