The essence of fighting with any long weapon – halberd, pike, quarterstaff, rifle with bayonet, shovel, spear, etc. – is keeping it oriented toward the threat by pivoting the body, not moving the weapon, and keeping as much length as possible between you and danger. Passively, this has the benefit of getting a great honking pole in your opponent's way ("holding him at bay," as it were); actively, it lets you react at a distance where you don't need to be swift, because you've traded distance for time. I'm actually pretty happy with the way most long two-handers end up at +2 in my proposed system.
