Nictitating Membrane (B71: 1/lvl) is an exotic physical advantage that provides Damage Resistance for the eyes which is switchable ("you can open and close, like an eyelid")

Cost breakdown[]

Switchable normally costs +10% and DR does not normally benefit the eyes without Force Field enhancement which costs +20%. That's +30% in enhancements.

DR, Limited is a discount of -10% per -1 to hit, so eyes at -9 to hit would be -90%, which would only bring the cost down to -70%.

This brings up a math problem (the ability is too cheap) especially since NM has two additional benefits:

  • bonus to HT rolls concerning eye damage
  • possibly offsets the penalty to vision rolls underwater (book/page needed, mentioned on /tg/)

One simple way would be to apply the Flexible -20% limitation, allowing blunt trauma to carry over. Most crushing/cutting attacks can't target the eye, so rather than 5-damage attacks the largest vulnerability would be to 10+ damage piercing/impaling ones. For that to apply would require 10 levels of Nictitating Membrane, which is DOUBLE the cost of No Eyes, so it's effectively free points.

Tough Skin is another idea, but this would be an exception to the rule against stacking Tough Skin w/ Force Field. As-written there should not actually be a way to protect the eyes without protecting the eyes from contact agents.

representing cars[]

Basic Cars[]

Cars are Insensate yet the are usually not Blind because they allow their passengers (their Payload) to use a sense to perceive beyond the car.

This sense cannot be blocked by destroying "eyes" (blowing out a windshield still lets passengers see!) so No Eyes makes sense to prevent that.

Yet it does provide DR to the passengers so Nictitating Membrane could represent that.

Despite having 'no eyes' there are limited viewing ports (you can't see out of a car at all angles) so it should still be possible to COVER the eyes.

Eyes are a sublocation of the face, so covering the entire Face should be adequate.

For No Face situations like No Head that should instead require covering the entire Torso, meaning that "No Eyes" characters should not be able to see through their limbs.

Cars are able to extend the use of their 'sight' to their passengers, as well as the protection of the membrane DR, but NOT the 'no eyes' benefit (if damage gets past DR, passengers' own sight can be blinded!)

That might be done by taking Affects Others enhancements (with Area Effect equal to vehicle volume) with a perhaps 1/5 cost modifier to the enhancement representing only able to give sight to those who are internal.

This could have "required advantage: sight" so that only seeing users can see through the car, blind people aren't made unblind.

or maybe see-through windshields and side windows are something like "Invisibility (Face Only)" ?

Toolkit cars[]

No Windows was eventually introduced as a distinct approach to deal with this. It's unclear if it's possible to have both. Certain things might actually have both, like the megazord where the robot has a head w/ eyes (perhaps with a camera scope) and a spot for pilots to sit in the chest which may or may not have it's own windows.
