Partial is a limitation for Damage Resistance.
It is initially set at -10% per -1 penalty needed for a hit location, with some exceptions:
- -20% will cover either BOTH arms or BOTH legs:
- if it covers only one, it is doubled to -40%
- -40% will cover either BOTH hands or BOTH feet:
- if it covers only one, it is doubled to -80%
- it is unclear how this works for beings with two necks or two heads
- Due to it initially being a -0 penalty to hit the torso, a custom rule was presented that it was -10%. Note that the groin is considered part of the torso in it's description, despite them being separate Random Hit Location results.
bikinis[]
S78 says this should just be -30% for covering all vitals.
multiple partial[]
Skull and vitals is set as a -25% limitation.
this is like having multiple Bane (max -15 for very common
weapons[]
Partial, Bow was used for archers who could get extra DR for any bow in their hand
this was part of Bow Fencer in DF11p32
Low-Tech[]
This broke the "torso" into the chest (targeted at -0) and abdomen (targeted at -1).
Furthermore the "chest" is broken down into "upper chest" (targeted at -1) and presumably the remainder being classified as "lower chest" (no listed penalty but presumably also -1).
This could give cause to re-assess whether the entire torso should still be covered for a mere -10% since that would be the mechanical cost for such locations too.
One option might be to take a stance of adding a blanket -10% for all locations. This would make upper chest -20%, "either chest" -10%. There is no longer a way to target "any part of the torso" as of Low-Tech.
The problem of this taking "one extremity" to -100% could be dealt with by taking enhancements like hardened or a custom non-canon provides extra DR enhancement, where final DR is modified by whatever % one takes as an enhancement. This is a pretty reasonable thing given PAWS sets a precedent of -100% = final DR is -100%, perhaps +100% = final DR is +100%
Horror[]
H159 defined "Partial, Torso/Face Only, -10%" for the Martian. Why is unclear: since this is effectively an either-or limitation 0.1x0.5 should work out to a -5% limitation.
Supers[]
GURPS Supers page 78 introduces new variations.
-5% is "covering the torso, arms, legs, and feet, but leaving the hands or face bare, or covering the face with no more than a domino mask" which is really two versions since it says OR and not AND:
- covering the torso, arms, legs, and feet, but leaving the hands bare (face covered)
- covering the torso, arms, legs, and feet, but leaving the face bare (hands covered)
It also specifies "leaves arms and legs bare amounts to torso armor, worth -10%" implying that the DR would protect the neck/face/skull even though "torso only" wouldn't do that.
-25% is defined as a combination of "Vitals Only" and "Skull Only". Vitals Only is normally only worth -30% while the skull would be worth -80%. Using either-or limitations, 0.3 x 0.8 = 0.24 so this was given a slight boost.
Weight[]
The Demon Princess explicitly has 10 HP of armor weighing 2 pounds.
One conceptual problem with chainmail bikini here is:
- The bare parts can be targeted as usual and have no DR.
Bikini classically does cover at least part of the chest (if not the abdomen) using the new rules in low-tech...
MA[]
MA137's Notes for Existing Hit Locations introduced a 1 in 6 chance of hitting the vitals when targeting the torso in general though, so to avoid that chance (avoid the DR of the vitals) should probably take more skill.
"The GM may reserve extra die rolls for randomly targeted attacks." is just an option, without using that reservation, the rolls apply to more than just randomly targeted attacks, but also intentionally targeted ones too.
One possibility might be to make generic "anywhere on the torso attack" a +1, so that it has a higher chance of working than "only targeting chest" or "only targetting abdomen" or "only targeting vitals".
If that's the case though, then randomly targeting ANYWHERE on the body should be even easier, like a +2 to hit.
- This second step is not necessary however, as you can get a partial +1 in a sense by using the miss by 1 rules if for random hits you tweak the rule where you roll random hit locations, and if one of the MB1 places (head/neck) gets rolled, a generic torso hit results instead.
GURPS Zombies[]
pg 69 rates All but skull as -5%, equivalent to an Occasional rarity Bane
This differs from skull has only 2 total DR being considered merely a feature in Magic/Fantasy, or Thin Skull being worth an entire point.
