Cost: -80 points

Quadriplegic (B150) is a mundane physical Disadvantage where you are paralyzed in all your arms and legs, or lack limbs entirely. It is one of the highest-value disadvantages at -80, but still worth fewer points than the -100 for Decreased Time Rate.

Comparison[]

B36 implies that TOTAL paralysis is worth 150 points via it's pricing as an Incapacitation. B429 clarifies this includes stopping "speech", so the -25 value of Mute would be baked in. Since "voluntary" movement is specified, involuntary things (breathing, keeping balance if upright) still happens.

That would still only increase the value to a total of 105 points. The extra 45 must be accounted for.

No Bite and No Headbutt are implied aspects which would NOT apply to paraplegic.

Weak Bite and Missing Teeth allows some estimate to be made for the 1st.

Components[]

Would include Cannot Punch and Cannot Kick in these subsets. It calls out Lame (B141) subset Paraplegic (B151) and No Fine Manipulators (B145) subset No Manipulators The cost -80 is equal to the sum of their values -30 and -50.

  • "No Manipulators" has the benefit of not having TARGETABLE arms, but Lame giving the same -30 value to both Paraplegic and Legless establishes that the benefit of "it's conceivable you could regain the use of" balances out the drawback of "can suffer HP loss from attacks targetting it".

Other factors not highlighted but which would logically exist:

  • a legless person would weigh less than a person with paralyzed legs
  • legs present a target of opportunity which could be targeted instead of something more useful. In some cases legs which are unusable have no (or a reduced) sense of shock/pain too. For example: in Child's Play 6: Curse of Chucky when Chucky's axe gets stuck in the leg of Nica Pierce, which hurts her less than his intended target of her torso.

Disadvantage limit[]

A benefit to take QP instead of PP+NM is that ST and DX can be reduced by 4 points each (receiving points) without it contributing to the limit. ST 4 [40] + DX 4 [80] is 120 points one can exceed the disadvantage limit by.

Mitigation[]

Readers are instructed to consult B147's One Arm for rules on applying a Mitigator (B112) or the necessity of paying back points received for it if it's fixed.

Mitigator rules are disappointing in Basic Set, the go-to for this is PU8

Notes[]

  • hits to the spine (the cervical spine) can cause this instead of the usual paraplegic result (which assumes lumbar spine). This strangely has no rules for intentionally targetting it on MA137, rather there's just a 1 in 6 chance of it happening on any crushing attacks to the neck from the rear.
    • weirdly it assumes the cervical spine to have the same DR and HP as the lumbar spine, even though it's known to be thinner. Something like 2/3 HP and 2DR is probably more reasonable.
