A vile, wicked creature of a mage had reached the end of an unnaturally long life, and turned their self hatred towards magic itself, binding a grimoire that would bring an end to the Art, magic itself...
The Book of Null is a magically-enhanced memetohazard[1]. Those who read the Book become the Null, a twisted version of themselves, whom seek out other sapients to convert (to their anti-magic cause) or destroy.
The Book[]
The book itself is a hefty tome, bound in the jet black, leathery scales of some foul, ancient dragon. A flat, dark, circular stone is firmly embedded into the cover. The story within--according to the Null, at least--is the life story of the Wretched Mage, one who gave up everything for power, only to curse it all and turn their ire towards magic. The first page is ensorcelled with some enthralling spell, one which compulses the reader to keep reading. At the end of the book lies the second spell, a potent curse that turns the reader into a Null.
The Null[]
Those affected by the Null Curse are twisted but functional, parodies of humanity (or whatever sapient species they once were). Their translucent skin bears dotted, geometric patterns that permeate down to the bone.
Abilities and Behavior[]
Null-cursed entities have a mana-dampening aura that penalizes spells around it like a form of anti-Magery. They are highly resistant to spells.
Fanon Notes[]
- Null do not have supernatural Night Vision and cannot use magic (on a physical and ideological level), so they are likely to act less like magical cultists and more like an angry mob, armed with torches and mundane weapons.
- Null are Unfazeable, although story-wise are likely to have a singular fear--being reminded of the use and wonder of magic.
- The article does not list a cure for the Null Curse
- It is not explained how a Null would react to examples of Clarke's or Niven's Law (ie where magic and technology are interchangeable)
