The Great Games of al-Wazif, or simply "The Great Games", are a series of competitions held in al-Wazif each spring, consisting of a wide variety of physical and intellectual challenges, including but not limited to--wrestling, combat with blunted weapons, jousting, hunting and hawking, chess, magic, acrobatics, extemporaneous poetry, and musical performance.
One of the greatest contests is called simply the Dare. A competitor is picked randomly (by lot), and performs some feat of their own choosing,[note 1] and the other competitors must attempt the feat or drop out. Success is not necessary to continue the Game, but the attempt is critical. A panel of judges determines if failed attempts are genuine, and a panel of mages and physicians are readied to save injured competitors. Those who are dire wounded are unlikely to be ready for the next challenge, however.
